Boo Dogs

So it may be 2017 and you have your goals all prepped for losing weight or being super healthy but come on, we all need a treat!  At the weekend this is our go to lunch time treat.  We started making Boo Dogs in Uni but with hot dogs and the ingredients have gotten better over the years, thankfully!  The good thing about this is you can make it your own by adapting the recipe to what you love.  Give it a go and let me know what you love with yours!

To start you will need:

  • Sausages – the best you can afford.  We like to use chipolatas also however this time we got some massive sausages from the farmers market
  • X2 baguettes
  • Cheese
  • Onion
  • Mustard and ketchup

I start by frying my sausages in a non-stick pan over a medium heat as we don’t want to burn them!

Next, thinly slice your onion. We prefer to use a red onion for this as it’s a little sweeter.  In a non-stick frying pan I add a drizzle of olive oil over a medium heat.  Once hot, I add the onion.  To help them soften I sprinkle in some salt and also a little bit of sugar to give them that crispy sweet finish.  In Uni we would add a teaspoon of sweet chilli sauce to make them spicy, sticky and sweet!

We love a soft baguette so picked up a French baguette however you can also buy the home bake baguettes which are great for this.  I add a little Lurpack to the baguettes at this point.

Grate some cheese for topping your dogs and turn on your grill at this point to get it warmed up.

Add as many sausages as you like to the baguette and top with onions and condiments.  I don’t eat onions so I leave them off mine but add them to Jon’s.  We then have tomato sauce and American mustard.

Add the grated cheese to the Boo Dogs and pop them under the grill.  Once the cheese starts to bubble whip them out and serve them ASAP!

This is the “Original Boo Dog” but you can try out different toppings to make your own Boo Dog.  Let me know what you would love to have on yours in the comments.

Kirsty 🙂
